The original heat-looking for missiles would just level in direction of the focus on and chase it; this was inefficient. More recent missiles are smarter and make use of the gimballed seeker head coupled with what is recognized as proportional guidance in an effort to steer clear of oscillation and also to fly an efficient intercept path.
